Derek McInnes takes over as Rangers manager after Danny Rohl joins RB Salzburg

Rangers announce Derek's appointment McInnes takes over as manager on a three-year contract, with the club agreeing compensation terms with Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts for McInnes to join Ibrox. The appointment makes McInnes the third manager of Rangers in a year, as Danny Rohl joins Austrian club RB Salzburg, having previously confirmed the move. McInnes, 54, took charge of Hearts last season after joining from Kilmarnock and led the team to a second-place finish in the league table. Missed out on the title to Celtic on the final day of the season. But they were able to successfully compete for a place in the UEFA Champions League selection from Rangers. McInnes said after the appointment: "It's a real honour" and admitted that expectations from fans here are very high. “It is my job, the team and the players to meet those expectations. Get the club back to performing as it should. There's hard work ahead. But preparations have begun. And I look forward to meeting the current players in the coming weeks and welcoming the new faces.” McInnes will be joined by a team of assistants, including Alan Archibald, Paul Sherin and Craig Clark, while McInnes' position is referred to in club documents as 'Mac Innes'. "Manager" is different from Rohl's title, who used the term "head coach" before moving to Salzburg. Club president Andrew Caveneh praised McInnes as someone the club has always respected and who has the right experience. “He knows how to win in this league. and just had a strong season with Hearts,” Caveneh said. However, the change comes amid plans for a summer restructuring of the team. Rohl received a budget to strengthen the team and recently brought in Lawrence. Shandland joined from Hearts earlier this month. McInnes has more than 800 appearances in charge, starting his coaching career at St Johnstone in 2007 before a brief stint with Bristol City, then joining Aberdeen in 2013, spending eight years there. Won the League Cup in his first season and led the team to finish runners-up in the league four seasons in a row. After a 10-month sabbatical, McInnes returned to manage Kilmarnock in January 2022 and led the team back to the top flight, before a run of 10th, 4th and 9th place finishes at Rugby Park over three seasons. Last season McInnes won 28 out of 44 matches across all competitions with Hearts. His team has not lost at home in the league all season. And has a better performance than Rangers in 3 out of 4 meetings, including wins over Celtic both at home and away. The move to Ibrox will reunite McInnes with Shandland. After the Scottish striker moved to Rangers three weeks ago. He scored 20 goals for Hearts last season. Rangers are not slowing down in their search for a new manager and the first team are due to report back for training this week. The club is also preparing to play in the Europa League.
