Former three-time German national team player Manfred Ritchell has died.
Manfred Ritchell, former right winger who played for Kickers Offenbach, Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Schalke 04, has died. The former team broke the news on Friday, recalling a total of 33 goals from 231 Bundesliga games. and once scored a goal for Germany from the penalty spot in the Euro 1976 qualifying game.
One of the highlights of his international career came on 27 April 1975 in the European Championship qualifying game against Bulgaria. Germany trailed 0–1, but Ritchell took a penalty in the 75th minute and scored to tie the game 1–1. According to Schwabacher Tagblatt newspaper records from 2021, before the shooting it was reported that Franz Beckenbauer and Paul Breitner did not accept responsibility for the killing.
Ritchell made three appearances for Germany, all three in the spring of 1975.
